Living benefits are riders that may let you access part of your life insurance death benefit early if you’re diagnosed with a qualifying chronic, critical or terminal illness. Using them reduces the death benefit, and availability and terms vary by policy and state.
It can be tax-advantaged, but it depends on how the policy is designed and managed. Policy loans and withdrawals up to the amount you’ve paid in are generally not taxed if the policy stays in force and isn’t a modified endowment contract. Loans reduce the cash value and death benefit, and a policy that lapses with a loan can create a tax bill. Please talk with a tax professional about your situation.
